I purchased the Clarion VT1500B from Amazon in February 2009. Video resolution and sound quality are excellent. My 4-year-old daughter approves and says “that’s AWESOME”! This unit was much cheaper than the rear-seat-entertainment system offered by the car dealer, and it offers a lot more.
The built-in dome lights are white LEDs and are very bright when lit. One nice feature is that when power is cut off and restored, the movie picks up right where it left off. The VT1500B does block the rear view mirror when the screen is lowered, but what do you expect when something the size of a laptop is hanging from your ceiling?
Here are my notes from installing the VT1500B in a 2004 Toyota Sienna LE minivan. Factory radio was already replaced with JVC KD-HDR1 receiver and JVC KS-U57 auxiliary input adapter. Audio hookup notes apply to JVC system. Factory rear seat audio (RSA) device was removed from ceiling, and four (10mm hex-head) mounting screws were saved for later use. Wire bundle formerly connected to RSA was not used, and was tucked above headliner. Old RSA unit was overlaid onto rectangular VT1500B mounting plate to mark locations of new holes in plate. Four 1/4″ holes were drilled in VT1500B plate to match positions of RSA mounting holes. VT1500B plate was mounted using original 4 RSA mounting screws. No cutting of headliner required, but 2 metal tabs were removed from RSA area of ceiling to make room for plate.
Wiring includes 4-wire bundle (RED = Acc. 12V; YELLOW = +12V; GREEN = Door, and BLACK = GND) plus A/V outputs. A 4-prong connector (Radio Shack #278-767, cut in half, coupled) was spliced into bundle 6″ from DVD player using RS#64-3109 crimp connectors, then decoupled until player was mounted. RED line was tapped near fuse box from wire that feeds cargo-area 12V outlet, using RS#64-3053 tap-in connector and RS#270-1213 fuse holder with 5A fuse. GREEN & YELLOW were tapped from power supply of dome light above passenger side sliding door. Note that when GREEN door signal is low (zero Volts), the dome light will be ON. BLACK was tapped from lug on frame near fusebox. Audio connection was 20-foot stereo RCA cable with male plugs. Audio, RED, BLACK were run above headliner & behind trim piece of driver’s windshield pillar, then behind dash, without obstructing airbag behind pillar trim. Far end of audio cable was connected to RCA inputs of JVC KS-U57. For mounting of DVD player to rectangular plate on ceiling, the included screws were too short. Eight metric M4x20 screws were needed. Rubber o-ring not needed around top of DVD player.
